Caregiver or Nurse: Which Do You Need?

Understand the difference between practical daily assistance and professional nursing care when arranging support at home.

When caregiver support may fit

A caregiver primarily supports daily living: personal hygiene, dressing, meals, companionship, reminders and mobility assistance within their training. Discuss experience and suitability for the individual’s needs before accepting a match.

When to discuss nursing

If the care plan involves clinical procedures, wound management, injections, catheter care or clinical assessment, discuss appropriately qualified nursing support. A caregiver should not be booked as a substitute for a nurse for tasks outside their competence.

Some families need both

A person may need daily caregiver assistance as well as scheduled nursing visits. Describe each task separately so the care team can discuss a suitable combination rather than assume one provider can cover everything.

How to choose

Share the discharge instructions or care plan through the appropriate private care process, describe daily needs and ask which provider category fits. Qualifications, scope and availability must be checked. Urgent illness or deterioration requires medical attention, not a routine caregiver booking.
